Lorina looked on at her incredulously. The things that younger sisters dream up if one let them daydream. Still, she couldn't help but smile and kiss her sister's cheek. "It //was// a curious dream, dear, certainly;" Lorina said, "but now run in to your tea: it's getting late."
Alice got up and ran off with a dreamy expression across her face, and Lorina knew that her sister wouldn't soon forget her fancy. Resting her head upon her hand, she looked about at the brook and the bridge and went on thinking of the tale that Alice had just told her.
<<mousecontinue "Lorina started to daydream.">>No, it wouldn't do to daydream at her age. It wasn't proper, but it would be alright to think about it, wouldn't it?
[[Lorina reflected on Alice's tale.|Discovering a Door]]The story had been full of nonsense. A white rabbit with a waistcoat. A talking mouse, and birds and a whole host of things that shouldn't talk. There was a tea party with too many seats and not enough sense to fill them. Why it even had a queen with a temper so quick to set that she might order her own head removed if she said something cross to herself.
Lorina could almost see it: the rabbit bounding up over that hill yelling about how late he was. He would have to jump right up in front of Lorina to get up on the bridge, but Lorina certainly hadn't seen anything at all. So, perhaps the rabbit had darted from the line of old oaks, behind where Lorina sat and went along the brook and under the bridge. Idly, Lorina traced the path up the brook and under the white flagstone of the small bridge that ran over it.
There, much to her surprise, [[Lorina discovered a door|Under the Bridge]].<<set $currentLocation = "Under the Bridge">>Lorina got up, entirely forgetting the book she had been reading. She hadn't remembered there being a door under the bridge, though if she were being honest with herself she never had paid much attention to what was //under// the bridge.
Stooping to get under the bridge, Lorina made sure to step only where dry stones could support her feet. It wouldn't do to dirty her shoes just before tea time, after all. The door was old and made of cherry or maybe pine. It was fitted with a brass pull ring and an oversized keyhole, but was otherwise unadorned. What could possibly be behind it, Lorina wondered, as the bridge really wasn't big enough to have anything inside it.
<<mousecontinue "[[Lorina pulled open the door.|Turning Away From The Door]]">>"Why, this door doesn't belong to me," Lorina said to no one in particular. "It would be very rude of me to go about opening strange doors."
[[Lorina decided to go home.|Turning Away From The Door]]Double-click this passage to edit it.<<set $currentLocation = "The Hall of Doors">>Lorina turned away from the door and found herself, rather unexpectedly, in a hallway filled with doors. A row of lamps hung from the roof, which was so low that Lorina would have to duck if she wanted to walk under the lamps. There was a table in the middle of the room, made entirely of glass and something was upon it. The strangeness of it all reminded Lorina of something. Hadn't Alice told her about a hallway with doors and a glass table? Lorina had been paying attention to her sister, but the details got a bit fuzzy in the telling. Regardless, Lorina had no business being here. She must have went in the door by mistake, even though she was trying to do just the oppposite.
<<mousecontinue "[[Lorina left out the door.|Locked, Every One]]">>Only, the door wasn't there anymore. When she turned to open the door, she found a curtain instead. She was sure that she had not passed under a curtain when she entered. Nevertheless, Lorina pushed the curtain aside and found a door, that was about fifteen inches high, barely big enough for a cat. Clearly, Lorina hadn't come through that door, but which door had she entered this hall from?

Thrusting a hand at Lorina, the Knave said, "You know, you should really answer a question when someone asks you one, or else say nothing at all." "Well," Lorina said, slowly, "if I were there then suppose I forgot what happened. Could you tell me what happened then?"
<<endif>>The Knave thinks for a moment. "Well," he said, "The queen had the nerve to accuse me of stealing her tarts, and there was a lot of trotting of terrible evidence. Fortunately, you were there to deny their evidence and distract them while I slipped away. They would have surely found me guilty after that letter was found."
"What happened then?" Lorina said, <<insert "remembering how Alice had described the trial">>. They had called in a witness who had talked only about his own worries, and another who talked a fair amount about pepper. Alice had been called as a witness, but as she hadn't seen anything, there was no evidence she could give. Finally, a set of verses had been found, unaddressed and unsigned, having no bearing on the trial at all. Apparently with that, the Knave had been been nearly sentenced, if not for Alice's refusal to accept the farce of a trial<<endinsert>>.
